The ongoing skirmish between South Africa’s mobile operators over international call rates continued on Monday, with MTN announcing that its contract customers can now make calls to 200 foreign destinations for as little as 75c/minute.
The new rates are, however, available on a promotional basis only and are set to expire on 31 January 2014. They come just weeks after Cell C said it had cut international call rates on a promotional basis, also until the end of January next year.
Calls to the US, UK, France, Portugal, Germany, China, India and Nigeria have been cut to 75c/minute. Discounted rates apply to other markets, though at higher per-minute rates. Details of all the rates are available through USSD by dialling *111*2#, MTN said.
Earlier this month, Cell C said it was cutting its international rates to 12 popular international destinations to 65c/minute.
The Cell C rate applies to calls to the UK, US, Germany, Greece, Portugal, France, Belgium, Canada, Spain, India, China and Singapore and applies to both fixed and mobile lines in the destination countries. — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
