New research from credible network speed-testing services has put Vodacom ahead of rival MTN in terms of the speed available on their respective networks as the two battle it out over which has the fastest infrastructure.
The reports from Ookla — which owns Speedtest.net — and Atio have both put Vodacom ahead of its crosstown rival, the Vodafone-owned telecommunications company said on Thursday.
Using the results of over 185 000 tests across about 55 000 unique 4G devices between April and June 2018, Ookla found that Vodacom was “South Africa’s fastest 4G network”, the operator said.
Vodacom also came up tops in Atio’s “all technology Q2 2018” results. Atio is an independent drive-testing organisation in South Africa that uses specialised equipment fitted in custom vehicles to trial the various mobile networks with a range of different performance tests.
During the period April to June 2018, Atio performed hundreds of thousands of tests including up to 100 000 download tests.
Both Vodacom and MTN have invested tens of billions of rand in their network infrastructure in recent years to improve mobile broadband coverage and performance. — (c) 2018 NewsCentral Media
