Former MTN CEO Phuthuma Nhleko is rejoining the group’s board, this time as its chairman, outgoing chairman Cyril Ramaphosa announced at its annual general meeting on Tuesday.
Nhleko was appointed as the group’s CEO in 2002 and led a series of acquisitions across Africa and the Middle East that built MTN into a leading mobile telecommunications player in emerging markets.
He stepped down from MTN in 2011 and was replaced by chief operating officer Sifiso Dabengwa.
Ramaphosa stepped down at the AGM because of his decision to shift his focus away from business and into politics. He was recently elected as the ANC’s new deputy president at the party’s elective conference in Bloemfontein.
“It’s been a privilege to serve this company as chairman,” Ramaphosa told the AGM. — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
