Quraysh Patel has resigned as chairman of the state-owned broadcasting signal distributor Sentech. Patel handed his resignation to communications minister Roy Padayachie on Tuesday.
Patel’s decision to leave has been coming for several months, he tells TechCentral, and the recent change of guard at the ministry of communications – Padayachie replaced Siphiwe Nyanda, who was sacked by President Jacob Zuma — played no part in his decision.
Patel says he wants to pursue his own interests in the information and communications technology industry but could not do so to avoid a “perception of conflict of interest”.
In his seven months at Sentech, Patel has played an active role in sorting out problems left behind by the former management team. He was instrumental in recommending the appointment of the respected Setumo Mohapi as the troubled company’s new CEO.
