Telkom has dramatically expanded its uncapped 4G/LTE offer to 520 base stations, taking the product, which offers unmetered wireless broadband from R599/month, to seven provinces outside Gauteng. It has also upped the number of neighbourhoods in Gauteng that can get the deal.
The telecommunications operator, which has access to a large amount of spectrum in the 2,3GHz band that allows it to offer the solution, will now provide uncapped fixed-wireless 4G/LTE broadband in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape.
The offer, which is subject to signing a 24-month contract, is availabe immediately and will run until at least 30 June 2016.
“These packages are being rolled out to other areas in South Africa on the back of their success in Gauteng since their launch in June 2015,” Telkom said in a statement.
As part of the promotional offer, customers will also receive an antenna and installation by Telkom technicians at no additional cost. Promotional packages will be capped at 150 per base station to ensure a high-quality customer experience with the service, the company said in the statement.
The introductory offer will start at R599 for the first 50 customers (only available online), R699 for the second 50 and R799 for the final 50 available packages at each base station.
Telkom has provided a coverage map on its website, allowing people to check if their neighbourhood has access. On the coverage map, physical addresses can be entered to determine whether or not a customer is eligible to participate in the sale.
“Telkom’s SmartBroadband Uncapped High Speed Wireless service includes uncapped data for all traffic types. Normal fair-use policies will be applied,” Telkom said.
On its website, the company explained the fair-use policy in more detail.
“Uncapped wireless broadband is really uncapped for almost all applications and uses. These include e-mail, browsing, streaming traffic like video, music, YouTube, Apple TV, BoxOffice, Netflix, virtual private networking, voice over Internet protocol, real-time online gaming, back-ups and gaming downloads. For these you will never be capped and throttled,” it said.
However, a 50GB fair-use policy cap applies to BitTorrent traffic and downloads from Usenet servers. These services are typically used to download large files such as television series and movies.
“Customers will enjoy full speeds on the 50GB fair-use policy bundle between 12am and 6pm and will only be throttled on the speeds between 6pm and 12am, which is Telkom’s peak period on the network. Full connection speeds will be maintained during peak periods for general browsing, online gaming and video streaming and the customer experience will not be affected.” — (c) 2015 NewsCentral Media
