Uber and homegrown rival Zebra Cabs are attempting to get South Africans’ attention by offering voters free or discounted rides to polling stations on 3 August, the date of the municipal elections.
Zebra, which is backed by Transaction Capital, on Tuesday said that it will offer free rides to and from polling stations, up to a value of R100 per trip, using a special promo code — #VOTEZEBRA — in its smartphone app.
The move by the South African ride-hailing upstart comes after rival Uber announced it would offer riders in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth R30 off all rides to and from polling stations.
As with Zebra’s free offer, Uber users must enter a promotional code – VOTESA – in the promotions tab in the Uber app. This will entitle them to R30 off a trip to their local voting station, and R30 off for the trip home afterwards.
Uber said its promo code is applicable from 7am to 7pm on 3 August only. — © 2016 NewsCentral Media
