A senior staff member at the Universal Service and Access Agency of SA (Usaasa) has been suspended for alleged corruption and maladministration, the state-owned entity said on Wednesday.
“The allegations border on financial misconduct which is a very serious offence,” spokesman Khulekani Ntshangase said in a statement.
“In this regard, the agency elected to put this member on precautionary suspension pending outcomes of the investigation.”
Usaasa did not say who the staff member was.
The official is accused of, among other things, passing agency information to third parties, using agency equipment to produce pornographic material, and using board chairwoman Pumla Radebe’s electronic signature to get a loan to buy a car.
The staff member allegedly used the personal information of board members to make personal travel arrangements and reservations at hotels.
Ntshangase said Usaasa would continue investigations into further allegations against the staffer.
“The member concerned has been with the Usaasa for a long time; as such, allegations of this nature are causing the agency a lot pain as … trust is what binds Usaasa with any of its officials,” he said. — Sapa
