On the same day that Naspers is set to take the wraps off its new video-on-demand (VOD) service called ShowMax, another VOD player, Times Media Group’s Vidi, has claimed it’s become the first to market in South Africa with a streaming smart television application.
Vidi announced that it is partnering with Samsung to provide access to its VOD offering on the Korean manufacturer’s smart TVs.
“The Samsung smart TV app allows consumers to enjoy premium entertainment directly on their TV,” Vidi said in a statement.
“Users will receive one month’s free access to Vidi’s subscription VOD service with its more than 3 500 television episodes and one free movie from the transactional VOD collection of more than 400 movie titles,” it said.
The Vidi app is pre-loaded on every Samsung smart TV model from 2013 to 2015, it said. Models from 2012 will soon get the app, too.
Naspers is set to take the wraps off rival ShowMax at a media event later on Wednesday. TechCentral revealed last week, using information from the password-protected ShowMax website that was cached on Google’s servers, that the Naspers offering will work on PC-based Web browsers, on iPhones and iPads, on Android phones and tablets, on Samsung Smart TVs (including Tizen Smart TVs), and on LG NetCast Smart TVs and LG WebOS Smart TVs. – © 2015 NewsCentral Media
