An interface glitch between Vodafone and maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, Research In Motion (RIM), left Vodacom’s BlackBerry users without access to their e-mails and applications for several hours on Friday morning.
The access trouble started in the early hours of the morning. However, it was restored by lunchtime.
Vodacom spokesman Richard Boorman says Vodacom has been in contact with Vodafone over the issue, adding that while the problem has been resolved, BlackBerry customers may still experience some lag with browsing.
Cell C and MTN customers were not affected by the problem.
The company was hit by another technical glitch this morning, when a router was knocked out, cutting off several 2G and 3G data customers around Gauteng.
However, Boorman says the router was repaired soon after it went down.
He says the outage with BlackBerry was not created by the network troubles. “There was an interface problem between our parent company Vodafone and RIM,” he says.
A RIM spokesman in SA says the issues stem from a communications problem on Vodafone’s systems. Vodafone Egypt, Vodacom Lesotho, Vodacom Mozambique, Vodacom Tanzania and Vodafone Malta were all affected by the downtime, she says. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
