Mobile network MTN says it has fixed a data network outage but the company hasn’t yet decided whether it will reimburse customers.
MTN suffered a data network outage from 2pm on Thursday that affected its subscribers’ access to Internet services such as WhatsApp.
The network started to restore services on late Thursday and on Friday MTN said that “the data connection issue has been resolved and data services have been restored”.
MTN blamed the glitch on a migration of its data centre equipment.
But the mobile network hasn’t committed to reimbursing customers amid the disruption.
“We haven’t made a decision yet regarding that,” MTN spokeswoman Bridget Bhengu said by phone.
The network outage is also the second to hit MTN this year so far.
In February, MTN briefly experienced connectivity issues that affected approximately one million voice, SMS and data customers.
At that stage, MTN said it would reimburse customers who couldn’t use their voice, SMS or data bundles over a 24-hour period.
