Irdeto, a subsidiary of JSE-listed Naspers, has acquired anti-piracy specialist Denuvo, which works with videogame giants such as Electronic Arts and UbiSoft.
Denuvo provides technology and services for game publishers and platforms, independent software vendors, e-publishers and video publishers. It protects well-known games such as Star Wars Battlefront II, Football Manager and Injustice 2.
“With the global gaming market estimated to be worth US$128.5 billion by 2020, the partnership between Irdeto and Denuvo brings together decades of security expertise to help prevent revenue loss for game publishers and disrupt undesirable cheating in the gaming environment,” Irdeto said in a statement.
“The success of any game title is dependent upon the ability of the title to operate as the publisher intended,” said Irdeto CEO Doug Lowther. “As a result, protection of both the game itself and the gaming experience for end users is critical.”
Denuvo’s anti-tamper technology prevents hackers from copying and reverse engineering games to redistribute the content. It plans to use Irdeto’s security expertise, anti-piracy technology, Cloakware software security and application protection technology to strengthen its core offering.
Denuvo’s anti-cheating technology prevents hackers in multi-player games from manipulating and distorting data and code to gain an advantage over other gamers or bypass in-game micro-transactions.
Based in Salzburg, Austria, Denuvo employs 45 people in Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and the US. The value of the acquisition has not been disclosed. — (c) 2018 NewsCentral Media
