BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has released the latest version of its smartphone operating system in SA. BlackBerry 7.1 is available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Torch 9810, Curve 9360 and 9380 smartphones, and the Porsche Design P’9981.
The new software includes BlackBerry Tag, a way of sharing content with other BlackBerry customers using near-field communications (NFC) technology. By tapping two NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones together, users can share contact information, pictures, a URL from the browser or documents.
BlackBerry Tag can also be used to invite a friend to BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) or to pair their BlackBerry smartphone with an NFC-enabled Bluetooth device.
The software also allows users to turn their phones into a mobile hotspot that can be shared by up to 5 Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
A new battery-saving mode has been added, too. The feature provides the option of having device settings automatically adjusted when the battery power reaches a user-defined level. Some of the settings the mode will automatically adjust include the brightness level, backlight timeout and the mobile hotspot auto shutdown timer.
Curve 9360 and 9380 smartphone users now also have access to an FM radio application.
Research in Motion says customers can upgrade their smartphones to the new software for free over the air by visiting this website. — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media
