Consumers can now purchase applications in the Samsung Apps Store for Android using premium SMS rather than a credit card. The company hopes this will encourage users without credit cards, or those reluctant to use one for application purchases, to use the store.
“Until now, the only way to purchase from the Samsung App Store was via a credit card,” says Samsung SA MD Deon Liebenberg. He says this has precluded some consumers from being able to buy apps.
Customers can now choose to pay for apps via credit card or SMS at the check-out stage. If they choose the latter, the purchase will be confirmed via SMS and the cost will either reflect on the customer’s monthly bill if they are on a post-paid contract, or via a deduction from their phone credit balance if on prepaid.
The premium SMS billing service is available across all of Samsung’s Android devices on the MTN, Vodacom and Cell C networks. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
