TechCentral, South Africa’s biggest business-focused technology publication, has launched a channel on WhatsApp for breaking news.
Meta Platforms, the owner of WhatsApp, launched Channels recently as a “private way to follow what matters”.
Channels are available in the latest version of WhatsApp and are a “one-way broadcast tool for admins to send text, photos, videos, stickers and polls”, WhatsApp said in a blog post.
Privacy is built into the new WhatsApp Channels — users don’t see other channel members’ names or phone numbers unless they are already saved in their contacts.
“Who you decide to follow is your choice, and it’s private,” WhatsApp explained. Channels are not end-to-end encrypted, but don’t need to be as they are public by default.
