Google Maps has already become an indispensable tool for commuters looking for the fastest way to and from work thanks to its live traffic information. Now Google is introducing a new feature to Maps that will proactively alert you to problems ahead.
Google South Africa said on Thursday that it is introducing new traffic alerts to help users avoid jams. Now when you enter a destination, Google will provide a spoken alert about upcoming traffic conditions to allow you to better plan the fastest route.
“While you’re on the road, Google Maps will give you a heads-up if congestion lies ahead, and how long you’ll be stuck in a jam,” the company said in a statement.
“You’ll also get the option to take alternate routes, including explanations for why one is recommended — whether it’s the fastest or just avoids traffic,” the company said.
Google first introduced live traffic to Maps in South Africa in June 2012. The service was first launched for Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria, but has since become available for towns and cities across the country as well as the major roads between them.
The service works by crowd-sourcing information about speed and travelling time from other users. — (c) 2016 NewsCentral Media
