Stephen Mncube, the newly inaugurated chairman of the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa), says his plan is to focus on the parts of the country that are not adequately served by telecommunications operators.
Mncube was sworn in as Icasa chairman at a ceremony in Sandton on Friday morning. He says he wants to bring a sharper focus to delivering communications technology in areas that have traditionally been neglected.
Communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda on Wednesday announced Mncube’s appointment to the position.
Mncube says the industry is “a tale of two cities, with the best of times and the worst of times. If we only focus on the best, then the worst will permeate the industry.”
He says he understands he will face a “herculean task” as Icasa’s chairman, and has asked for industry participation and understanding.
Mncube will be getting straight to work, with the council spending the next week in a strategy planning session. — Candice Jones, TechCentral
