Naspers-owned comparison shopping site PriceCheck has inked a deal with MTN that will see the release of a co-branded version of the site’s mobile application in South Africa.
The two companies claim the deal is the country’s first between a mobile operator and an e-commerce company.
The co-branded app will feature PriceCheck’s existing functionality, including product and service price comparisons, product reviews, store details and a barcode scanner to double-check prices.
MTN group chief commercial officer Pieter Verkade says in a statement that the deal is an “important step” in the mobile operator’s expansion into the “digital space” and particularly into e-commerce.
There are plans to introduce the app in other markets in which MTN operates.
As part of the launch in South Africa, the app will be available across all MTN devices, and in app stores for Android, BlackBerry, Windows and iOS devices. The app will also be preloaded on the MTN Steppa, a low-end smartphone that costs about R500. MTN has already sold 60 000 Steppa phones since the product was launched earlier this year. — (c) 2014 NewsCentral Media
