An MTN store at the upmarket Coastlands Gatemax centre in Umhlanga was brazenly robbed in the early hours of Friday morning, police said on Friday.
Six men armed with handguns and assault rifles overpowered two security guards before robbing the store of thousands of rands worth of cellphones.
Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said the guard that was first accosted by the men had been instructed not to press the panic button.
“They broke the door with a crowbar and after 10 minutes the suspects came out carrying unknown parcel wrapped in white cloth and placed it inside the boot.
“They fled the scene in their a silver Golf 7 GTI. No shots were fired and no injuries reported.”
Zwane said a case of business robbery was opened with the Durban North police.
“No arrests have been made at this stage.”
This is the second such robbery near the northern parts of eThekwini Metro, after the MTN store in Tongaat was also robbed by a group of armed men earlier this month.
