Protea Glen in Soweto will get fibre to the home after Vox subsidiary Frogfoot Networks announced a roll-out in the area, with up to 20 000 homes and businesses to be connected in a phased approach.
The areas being covered as part of the infrastructure roll-out are Protea Glen East and West, with work starting in the West. This region will be divided into 10 zones, while Protea Glen East will comprise 11 zones, Frogfoot said on Wednesday in a statement.
Work on the project is set to commence in early July, and it is expected that the first zone — covering about a thousand houses — will be completed by the end of September.
Frogfoot is an open-access fibre provider, meaning customers will be able to select their own Internet service provider to get broadband access. There are currently 50 ISPs that provide Internet services through Frogfoot’s network.
“We are excited to be the first fibre-to-the-home provider in this area. Increased access to the Internet can help improve economic growth in the region,” said Frogfoot sales head Shane Chorley.
“As with other areas covered by Frogfoot fibre, schools within the coverage area can apply for a fibre link as part of the company’s schools promotion campaign, which gives these institutions access to a free fibre connection of up to 1Gbit/s, with their preferred ISP, and we urge schools in the area to take advantage of this opportunity by engaging with ISPs,” he said. — © 2019 NewsCentral Media
