MTN is increasing the download speed for users of its “uncapped” Internet products who reach fair-use limits. This follows a four-month trial, which ends this month, in which it offered uncapped mobile broadband without any limitations.
MTN, which is the only mobile cellular operator in SA to offer uncapped plans, says that from 1 February users of its “Uncapped Lite” packages will be able to download data at speeds of up to 256kbit/s, from 128kbit/s now, once they reach a 3GB monthly usage allowance. “Uncapped Pro” users will see speeds increased from 128kbit/s to 384kbit/s once a 10GB limit has been reached in any given month.
MTN says the current promotion without speed limitations prompted MTN to revise its fair-use policy, permantly increasing maximum line speed limits after the monthly allowances have been reached.
“This means that high-usage customers will then be throttled again after the current promotion, ending on 31 January, but at higher speeds than previously,” the company says. “These products have been designed for uncapped browsing, e-mail and social networking and customers are not encouraged to continuously download peer-to-peer files.” — Staff reporter, TechCentral
