JSE- and London-listed IT group Datatec has acquired security distributor Biodata IT for an undisclosed amount.
The group plans to merge Biodata IT with its Westcon business in line with its strategy to boost its presence in the IT security market.
Biodata was founded in February 2001 and distributes a range of security products from encryption software to antivirus products. The company has an annual turnover of R30m.
Datatec CEO Jens Montanana says: “Security is one of the key growth areas in the global IT market. Biodata has specialised skills along with a strong vendor portfolio. This acquisition will allow Westcon to bolster its distribution of security solutions”.
The transaction is the latest in a string of acquisitions Datatec has made this year. At the beginning of the year, it bought Asia-Pacific’s Netstar Group for almost US$20m. In April, it acquired an Indian management consulting business called BDA Connect.
Its most recent move is a R97m offer to buy local distribution business Comztek from Mustek. If the deal goes through, Datatec will also integrate Comztek into its Westcon business. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
