First National Bank will no longer support Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), the Web browser introduced with Windows 7, from September. The bank told customers on Thursday it cannot be restricted by the limitations IE8 imposes on its online banking system.

“It is our policy to support the three latest Internet Explorer browsers, which include versions 9, 10 and 11,” says FNB online banking CEO Lee-Anne van Zyl. “IE8 is outdated and no longer meets our security requirements.”

The Microsoft Web browser was released in March 2009 and came bundled with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. IE8 was also the last version of the browser supported in Windows XP.

In April, Microsoft announced that it would no longer release consumer security updates for the platform. The bank will, however, continue to support XP, and users still using the 13-year-old operating system simply need to upgrade to a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

After September, FNB intends blocking IE8 users from accessing its online banking portal. Those users will be redirected to download either Chrome or Firefox.  — © 2014 NewsCentral Media
