The move is meant to help MTN customers avoid bill shock, according to MTN South Africa chief marketing officer Brian Gouldie.
MTN customers will pay a standard rate of R2,50/minute when making local calls in a foreign destination. SMSes will cost 75c, while data is charged at R2/MB.
Calls received from home will be charged at R2,50/minute and calls back home or to other international destinations will cost R5/minute.
There are no opt-in charges.
This service applies to any mobile device on the MTN network, including smartphones, tablets and laptops. Customers must ensure they are roaming on an MTN network when abroad, otherwise normal roaming rates will apply.
