The Zimbabwean-born and SA-educated CEO of VMware appears to be stepping down. A report in IT channel publication CRN quotes “multiple” unnamed sources as confirming that Paul Maritz will relinquish the role.
What’s not known, according to CRN, is whether Maritz, who has led VMware for the past four years, will take another position within parent company EMC or whether he is exiting the company entirely.
Maritz, the third in charge at Microsoft after cofounder Bill Gates and now-CEO Steve Ballmer until he “retired” from the company in 2000, graduated with degrees in computer science from the University of Natal and the University of Cape Town. He attended Highbury Preparatory School and is a Hilton College old boy.
When at Microsoft, which he joined in 1986 after a five-year stint at Intel, Maritz oversaw the operational development of the company’s desktop, server and Internet software. He was at the company throughout its strongest growth period.
He joined VMware in 2008, replacing cofounder and CEO Diane Greene. Since then, the virtualisation specialist’s share price has soared, giving the company a market capitalisation at Monday’s close in New York of more than US$36bn. — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media
