Naspers is making its video streaming service Showmax available as a free value-added service to DStv Premium subscribers.
An update to the DStv Now app, released on Monday, said Showmax, which normally costs R99/month, can now be included in customers’ DStv Premium subscriptions at zero cost. Customers must, however, add the Showmax service to their DStv account.
The move comes just over a week after TechCentral reported that Showmax’s operations in Africa would be merged with MultiChoice’s DStv Digital Media division.
Imtiaz Patel, Naspers’s CEO of video entertainment, wrote in a letter to employees and seen by TechCentral: “The time has come for us to align these two services more closely to create an even better entertainment experience for our customers and to truly innovate in this space.”
In a statement, MultiChoice said that in addition to getting access to Showmax’s catalogue of more than 25 000 TV show episodes and movies via the DStv Explora decoder, DStv Premium customers will also be able to access Showmax via the DStv Now app, as well as their PC, laptop, mobile device, media player or smart TV.
The Showmax subscription gives customers access to two concurrent streams on different devices. Customers can download up to 25 TV shows and movies to their smartphone or tablet for viewing later.
Premium customers can use up to four mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to access the DStv Now app. — © 2017 NewsCentral Media
