A new smartphone application, developed by Cape Town-based “consumer engagement agency” iKineo, has been launched to showcase the Winelands of the Western Cape to tourists.
Available only for the iPhone for now, the app, called Sideways, allows tourists to search keywords by region and apply filters.
Each wine farm in the region has a listing showing details such as GPS coordinates, opening times and available wines.
iKineo spokesman Marthinus Botha says the app as aimed at both South African and international tourists.
Users can access curated lists showing must-see activities compiled by Winelands experts and celebrities, according to Botha.
In addition to wine farms and restaurants in the Winelands, the app also provides tourists with information about adventure activities such as running or cycling trails.
There’s a system that rewards Sideways users when they check in with their smartphone at specific wine farms. Accumulated points unlock rewards such as meal discounts and free wine tastings. – © 2015 NewsCentral Media
