Telkom is moving quickly to reconstitute its board of directors following government’s move at the company’s recent annual general meeting to block the election or reelection of four of its nonexecutive directors. On Friday, it announced it had appointed Leslie Maasdorp as a nonexecutive member of its board.
This brings the number of directors to nine following the appointment of Jabulane Mabuza and Kholeka Mzondeki ealier this year.
“We are pleased that the process to fill the vacancies on the board is moving swiftly,” says Telkom group CEO Nombulelo Moholi in a statement. “Mr Maasdorp’s wealth of knowledge and expertise is a valuable contribution to Telkom.”
Maasdorp is president for Southern Africa at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. He has worked at a senior level in investment banking for the past 10 years. He is also chairman of JSE-listed private education company Advtech.
He has also served in government, including as deputy director-general of the department of public enterprises and was a former special adviser to the minister of labour in 1994.
His previous board experience includes serving as a nonexecutive director of Absa and Johnnic. His banking experience includes serving as international adviser to Goldman Sachs International and as vice chairman of Absa Capital.
He has resigned from the board of Cell C, where he has served for the past four years, with immediate effect.
He holds a BA degree in economics and psychology from the University of the Western Cape and an MSc in economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. — (c) 2012 NewsCentral Media
