Cell C was experiencing severe network issues on Friday morning, with customers of the mobile operator’s network not contactable.
The outage appears to have started just before 8.30am.
Frustrated users have taken to Twitter to voice their dissatisfaction, complaining that they’re unable to make or receive calls. SMSes also appear to have been affected by the outage.
The outage doesn’t appear to be limited to any one region, with complaints coming in from around the country.
Attempts by TechCentral to reach a range of Cell C subscribers proved fruitless, with the calls simply being cut off before they even rang.
Cell C tweeted to a number of frustrated users, telling them that the company is “currently experiencing a call setup issue which is preventing some calls from going through when dialling a number”.
Cell C representatives could not be reached on their mobile phones. The company’s call centre number could also not be reached.
Update: Cell C provided the following update at 2pm on Friday: “At 12pm today full service was restored to our network. The problem was caused by a major fibre break that affected our services. Considering the magnitude of the problem, the team resolved it quickly. Thank you to our customers for their patience and we apologise again for the inconvenience.” — © 2015 NewsCentral Media
