Takealot Group CEO Frederik Zietsman said on Tuesday that the Naspers-owned e-retailer plans to add more services to its TakealotMore subscription service, which it launched last month.

TakealotMore offers two tiers, one costing R39/month and the other R99/month, providing free deliveries and other perks (see table below).

The launch came just days after US e-commerce giant Amazon.com launched retail marketplace operations in South Africa. Amazon is known internationally for its Prime service, which combines fast and sometimes free deliveries with other services, including Prime Video, its video entertainment platform.

Subscriptions for retail e-commerce services are starting to gain traction in the local market

Amazon, whose South African marketplace appears to have got off to a slow start, has not said when it plans to launch Prime in South Africa, only that it is coming at some point.

The lack of Amazon Prime in South Africa may have provided a gap for Takealot to build a strong alternative for local online shoppers. Subscriptions for retail e-commerce services are starting to gain traction in the local market, with Shoprite Holdings also recently launching a R99/month plan for users of on-demand delivery app Checkers Sixty60 that includes free delivery for orders of more than R350 and various discounts.

    Streaming video

The TakealotMore offering extends to Mr D restaurant deliveries and grocery deliveries via partner Pick n Pay. Mr D is owned by Takealot Group. Other subscription benefits include unlimited free same-day delivery, free click-and-collect options and unlimited free standard, next-day delivery and collect with no minimum order spend for Premium subscribers.

Zietsman said Takealot is now working to add more services to TakealotMore to grow its value proposition. Though no firm decisions have been made as to what this will include, one option is a streaming video service, akin to the Amazon model where Prime Video is bundled into Prime.

He said the company is also working to provide “additional discounts, privileges and promotions” to TakealotMore, without elaborating.  – © 2024 NewsCentral Media
