Telkom announced on Monday that it will offer a variety of converged voice and data packages to consumers under the name Telkom Mix in coming months.
The first offering under Telkom Mix brand includes a BlackBerry Curve 8520 with R250 8ta airtime a month, bundled with a landline with free evening and weekend calls. The package costs R399/month for a period of 24 months and will be available from 27 June.
Telkom has yet to announce products that bundle fixed-line broadband subscription bundled with cellular packages — a peculiar decision, particularly in light of the fact that during group CEO Nombulelo Moholi’s address at Telkom’s annual results presentation she spoke about how many consumers are requesting fixed-lines for broadband exclusively with no interest in fixed-line voice services.
The absence of broadband-based converged products is also made all the more unusual by the fact that Telkom explicitly says it wishes to grow both its broadband and mobile customer bases. One would expect that a range of products that combine the two would be first on the list.
Perhaps such a product will come next.
“A product range spanning both mobile and fixed value pools will assist Telkom to defend itself more effectively against competitors and to grow revenues,” Moholi says. — Craig Wilson, TechCentral
