Classifieds website OLX has come top of Google’s list of South African searches in 2012, while the late Whitney Houston was the second most searched term.
The search terms are included in Google’s annual “Zeitgeist” lists, where the Internet company publishes the most searched for terms around the world. The full data set can be found here.
Curiously, Hurricane Sandy, the storm that battered parts of the US in October, was the third most searched for terms by South African users in 2012.
Houston took the number one spot on the list of overall trending people in South Africa, followed closely by athlete Caster Semenya and “social celebrity” Khanyi Mbau.
In terms of technology trends, the third-generation iPad — “iPad 3” — captured South Africans’ imaginations, according to Google, coming in 10th overall and grabbing first place on the top gadgets list. The Samsung Galaxy S3 placed second, following by the Galaxy S2, the iPad Mini, the Nokia N9 and the iPhone 4S.
Most searched for bank brands were, in order, First National Bank, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank and Capitec.
