Vodacom is continuing with its strategy to push low-end smartphones into the mass market to drive up usage of its data network. On Tuesday, the operator took the wraps off its latest low-cost smartphone, the Vodacom Smart 6, which is firmly aimed at the prepaid market of consumers still using feature phones.
The new device will retail for R799 cash and prepaid customers will receive 100MB of data per month for the first six months when they purchase the phone. The Smart 6 also comes with free access to Vodacom’s e-school portal.
The 112g Vodacom Smart 6 is a 4-inch, 400×800-pixel smartphone running Android 4.4 (also known as KitKat).
The phone uses MediaTek’s 1GHz dual-core MT6572M processor, which is paired with 512MB of RAM. There’s 4GB of flash storage (only 1,9GB is available), but this can be expanded by up to 32GB using a microSD card.
The phone has a 2-megapixel camera, though Vodacom says it uses “interpolation technology” to provide an effective resolution of three megapixels.
Vodacom claims the 1 400mAh battery will deliver up to seven hours of talk time and up to 15 days of standby.
Connectivity is delivered via 2G (GSM/Edge) and 3G (HSPA+ up to 21Mbit/s) as well as 2,4GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.
The phone is available immediately and is also available on the uChoose flexi 110 contract for R99/month. The 100MB/month data promotion expires at the end of November and the data will only be allocated if the Vodacom Sim provided at activation remains in the device. — © 2015 NewsCentral Media
