Clinton speak out on China Internet attacks: In a high-profile speech on Internet policy on Thursday, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton offered a thinly veiled threat to China following recent cyber attacks in that country against Google and other companies. “Those who disrupt the free flow of information in our society or any other pose a threat to our economy, our government and our civil society. Countries or individuals that engage in cyber attacks should face consequences and international condemnation.” The New York Times points out that the wide-ranging speech marks the first time that a senior American official has suggested that Internet freedom should be a plank of American foreign policy. In response to Clinton’s remarks, China issued a statement saying they were unjustified and damaged bilateral ties. [The New York Times] [Bloomberg News]
