Telkom has unveiled plans to offer 8Mbit/s service to gated communities such as housing estates. However, there’s still no word on when the service will be available to all Telkom digital subscriber line (DSL) customers.
“We have signed agreements with two partners for our gated community initiative, the benefits of which we expect to start showing in the 2010/11 financial year,” Telkom says in notes accompanying its interim financial results for the six months to 30 September 2009.
“We intend to provide gated communities with speeds of up to 8Mbit/s,” it says.
Telkom adds that is also making “every effort to increase the bandwidth” available to its customers. “We are currently negotiating a triple-play partnership in order to provide our customers with enhanced content.”
Telkom had 602 720 DSL users on its books at the end of September, an increase of 22,6% from a year ago.
Broadband penetration as a percentage of residential post-paid telephone lines is now 17,5%, up from 15,4% a year ago, the company says in notes accompanying its interim results for the six months to 30 September 2009. — Duncan McLeod, TechCentral
