After nearly a full workday of intermittent outages across cellular operator Vodacom’s network, which have infuriated subscribers, the company has finally provided details of what has caused the problems and promised service is now being restored in affected areas.
The cause of the outage, which affected subscribers in selected areas across the country, was a multiple failure of transmission system equipment, according to Vodacom chief technical officer Andries Delport. This transmission system provides the connectivity to support the wireless network.
The transmission failure, which occurred on Thursday morning, had a knock-on effect on other areas of the network. This resulted in an overall degradation of service.
“We’re currently working flat out to get service restored to all customers as quickly as possible,” Delport says. “We expect that network congestion could persist into the evening but are confident that it will subside quickly.”
Delport says Vodacom will conduct a “full investigation into the cause of the failure” and how it can “further improve network redundancy”.
“We apologise to every customer who has been affected,” he says. “What happened today was not acceptable and we will make sure that we do everything possible to avoid a recurrence.”
Vodacom says it will add significantly to its own transmission network capacity. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
