Former Vodacom executive Pakamile Pongwana will take the reins as CEO at the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) on 1 November.
Pongwana, previously a managing executive for regulatory affairs at Vodacom South Africa, will replace outgoing Icasa CEO Themba Dlamini.
Icasa spokesman Paseka Maleka says the authority isn’t yet in a position to make a formal announcement about who will take on the CEO role when Dlamini leaves.
However, he confirms that the position has been advertised for some time and that the Dlamini is due to leave at the end of this month.
Pongwana could not immediately be reached on his mobile phone on Tuesday for comment, but TechCentral has learnt from two separate sources that he has been appointed to the job.
Pongwana was with Vodacom for eight years, from June 2005 to July 2013. Before that he was deputy director-general in charge of telecommunications policy at the department of communications under former DG Andile Ngcaba, who now chairs Dimension Data’s Africa and Middle East board.
TechCentral reported in 2011 that Pongwana had been considered a favourite in the race to take on the role of communications DG, a job that eventually went to Rosey Sekese.
