Samsung Electronics is offering free 3D video content on demand over the Internet to supported television sets, including to SA consumers. However, the country’s bandwidth constraints are holding back uptake of the service, the company says.
The Korean company launched its 3D video-on-demand (VOD) service in April for its range of Smart TVs. Consumers have access to 28 types of free 3D content, including films, music videos, children’s programming, documentaries and trailers from partner Dreamworks. By the end of the year, 70 3D videos will be available through Samsung’s “Explore 3D” application.
However, there is a catch for SA consumers. Samsung Electronics SA product and marketing manager Corrie Labuschagne says a download connection speed of at least 4Mbit/s is required to use the service.
“This service has not seen as great an uptake locally [because it’s been] hindered by the country’s connectivity infrastructure and the improvements that are still taking place here,” says Labuschagne.
To access the VOD service, consumers with 3D Smart TVs need to download the app from Samsung’s TV app store. TVs supported are the D8000, D7000, D6600 and D6000. — Staff reporter, TechCentral
