Seacom has moved to 100G optical network transport technology, and lit up an additional 500Gbit/s of capacity on its subsea cable that connects Africa with Europe.
The company said it made substantial investments in network infrastructure in 2016, and plans to add significantly to network bandwidth in 2017 as demand for big data, cloud and video technology expands.
“Seacom has invested in shifting all key elements of the network to 100G technology, which increases throughput while reducing costs,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. It said the 100G upgrades allow it to add bandwidth with less than 30 days’ lead time.
CEO Byron Clatterbuck said the upgrades have helped bring content providers into Africa.
The company is also expanding its coverage into new countries. Last year, it launched its first point of presence in Kigali, Rwanda, and recently added a site in Gaborone, Botswana.
