It’s official. Mobile operator Cell C is the new title sponsor of South African rugby franchise the Sharks. The three-year year deal is effective from 1 January 2014.
“This sponsorship will see the Cell C brand emblazoned on the playing kit of the Sharks Professional Teams, the KwaZulu-Natal Amateur and Schools teams as well as the Sharks Academy,” the two organisations said in a statement on Thursday.
“Our new title sponsor has also acquired naming rights for the Sharks professional teams, therefore from January 2014, the Sharks teams will be known as the Cell C Sharks,” said Sharks CEO John Smit.
Mr Price was previously title sponsor of the KwaZulu-Natal rugby franchise.
Rugby is a popular sponsorship vehicle for mobile operators. Vodacom, for example, has always been a big sponsor of South African and southern hemisphere rugby and currently sponsors Pretoria outfit the Bulls. MTN sponsors the Lions team, which is based in Johannesburg. — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
