If you were experiencing any problems with the messaging service WhatsApp on New Year’s Eve, you were not alone.
Users across the globe complained that their WhatsApp messages weren’t going through.
Some of them thought that is was connection problems with their phone or network, but a WhatsApp spokesman confirmed to Reuters that the Facebook-owned service was indeed experiencing an outage.
The spokesman said: “Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp for a short period today [Thursday]; we’re working to restore service back to 100% for everyone.”
No official statement has been published on WhatsApp’s Facebook page or Twitter page at the time of writing.
The main problem appeared to be that the app couldn’t connect to the Internet, even if the user had a working mobile or Wi-Fi connection.
The problem affected US, Canadian and European residents mostly, but some South Africans also complained that their messages weren’t reaching the desired people.
The messaging client has issues sending and receiving messages on both Android and iOS. Not all users experienced the problem.
In September, WhatsApp announced that it had become the world’s most widely used instant messaging client with more than 900m monthly active users. — News24
