Telkom warned on Tuesday that a recruitment scam is promising successful candidates a paid internship at the company but actually fleecing job seekers out of money.
The fraudsters promise those who are successful a paid “Telkom internship” upon payment of a “learnership fee” of R90, the company said.
The advertisements have targeted candidates in Bloemfontein, the Free State and Limpopo, with the scamsters using online classified service Gumtree to lure job seekers, promising a monthly salary of R9 894,33/month.
“We are appalled that these scamsters are taking advantage of people who are simply seeking honest employment,” said Telkom managing executive for group communication Jacqui O’Sullivan.
“Of course, it is also very worrying that these conmen are using the Telkom brand to conduct their criminal activities. We would like to reassure the public that we have launched an investigation into this fraud and will pursue the investigation in close consultation with the South African Police Service.”
She said people must be cautious when pursuing job offers online. “We hope that our efforts to expose this scam will shield the public from further fraud of this nature.” — (c) 2015 NewsCentral Media
