The SABC’s chief technology officer, Richard Waghorn, who was responsible for leading the broadcaster’s migration from analogue to digital terrestrial television and who has played a pivotal role in the country’s move to the new system, has resigned. He leaves the corporation this week.
Waghorn, who joined the SABC in March 2009, was previously distribution controller at the BBC, where he project managed the launch of Freeview, the UK’s free-to-air digital terrestrial TV platform.
He developed strategies for the UK switchover and directed the implementation of the frequency plan and broadcast infrastructure, negotiating procurement contracts worth £2bn.
As head of the SABC’s R800m technology business, he oversaw 900 staff in the television and radio facilities, broadcast, distribution and IT business units.
Waghorn tells TechCentral he resigned at the end of September and is leaving the SABC on good terms. He says he will “return to Europe” in January and that he is “ready for a new challenge”. Long-serving SABC executive Gelfand Kausiyo will take over as chief technology officer. — Duncan McLeod, TechCentral
