The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, better known as Icann, is a nonprofit organisation responsible for various Internet tasks, including managing top-level domains on the Internet and the allocation of Internet Protocol address space. It oversees highly bureaucratic and complex tasks but ensures the orderly management of the Internet.
In this week’s extended episode of TalkCentral, your hosts Duncan McLeod and Candice Jones talk to South African Mike Silber, a director at Icann, about how the organisation works and look at some of the more pressing issues it’s dealing with. These include the introduction of the .xxx generic top-level domain for adult websites and the looming switch to Internet Protocol version 6 and how it affects both SA and the rest of Africa.
