Cell C marketing director Simon Camerer, the man behind the recent corporate rebranding at Cell C and the advertising campaigns that got rival Vodacom seeing red, is leaving the cellular operator at the end of the year after more than seven years in the position.
He says he plans to take a break with his family before deciding what to do next, but says he is keen to remain involved in the information and communications technology industry. He says he already has a “couple of irons in the fire”.
A media report on Monday said that both Camerer and Sue Kennedy, Cell C’s head of sales and distribution, had resigned. This followed the recent resignation of chief technology officer Ron Reddick.
Camerer is somewhat reluctant to say why he’s leaving, but hints that a restructuring of the business under Simon Duffy — who is leading the company in an acting capacity following the departure earlier this year of Lars Reichelt — played a role in his decision. He says Duffy has a “particular view” of how the company should be structured.
“I felt that the end of this year was the right time to leave,” he says.
Camerer is credited with leading the successful rebranding of Cell C after it launched its third-generation mobile network. The cheeky campaigns flighted by the operator got it into trouble on a number of occasions after rivals took exception and lodged complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority.
Vodacom, in particular, was incensed by a campaign featuring comedian Trevor Noah in which Cell C took the mickey out of the operator’s rebranding to the red of its parent Vodafone (video below). — Staff reporter, TechCentral
