Sentech has announced that it has switched on all 178 of its digital terrestrial television (DTT) transmitters, ensuring digital population coverage of 84,23% and geographic coverage of 57,99%.
The news comes in the wake of the statement by communications minister Faith Muthambi on Thursday that government is ready to proceed with the digital migration process.
In a statement, Sentech CEO Setumo Mohapi said that it’s been an “intensive and fruitful journey” in rolling out DTT coverage.
“We have come a long way from our first transmitter switch on in the DVB-T2 standard in the 2011/2012 financial year,” he said.
Mohapi said Sentech will now focus on stabilising and testing the network for commercial readiness.
The signal distributor has been ready for digital migration for some time and has been waiting for the wrangling over set-top box control and encryption to be resolved.
The 15,77% of the population that is not covered by DTT will be covered by the direct-to-home satellite gap filler solution, which is complete, the company said. — © 2015 NewsCentral Media
