Free Wi-Fi provider Project Isizwe will offer users access to free video-on-demand (VOD) content, its backers announced on Wednesday.
The offering, called WiFi TV, is a mobile-friendly VOD service available for unlimited access over Project Isizwe’s Wi-Fi network in the greater Pretoria region.
The first product is called “Connect Up Tshwane”, a bouquet of “hyper-local” content produced by young “citizen journalists”. Access to zero-rated on the Pretoria Wi-Fi network and through the project’s Tobetsa online portal.
There are four main channels made for and about the people of Pretoria, based around the areas of the Project Isizwe free Wi-Fi roll-out in Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Atteridgeville and the Pretoria CBD. The channels will produce content around nine main themes, from fashion and style to showcasing musicians and other talent.
WiFi TV and ConnectUp Tshwane were initiated by Project Isiziwe in partnership with ConnectTV, serving as a pilot to show governments what is possible once you have provided free access to the Internet in low-income communities. — (c) 2014 NewsCentral Media
