Telecommunications operator Telkom joined First National Bank in having a blue Monday as technical glitches took both institutions offline.
First to go down was FNB, with problems apparently associated with its network causing the bank’s website, smartphone and tablet app and point-of-sale terminals going offline.
Next, Telkom’s data centre was having serious problems on Monday afternoon, taking out services for retail and business customers.
Telkom customer contact centres and shops were also affected.
It said customers are not able to complete payments to Telkom at banks and other service centres as a result of the outage. Customers are also not able to complete airtime and top-up purchases.
Telkom spokesman Jacqui O’Sullivan said technicians were working to restore full service. The company later said that full services have been restored. The problem had been caused by a network switch failure.
It is understood the faults at FNB and Telkom were unrelated. — (c) 2015 NewsCentral Media
