MWeb now has direct access to Cell C’s mobile data network after the two signed an agreement in terms of which the MultiChoice-owned Internet service provider will have access to an access point name (APN) supplied by the mobile operator.
The move, which comes in the wake of the successful launch by rival Afrihost of a mobile broadband offering — using an APN provided by MTN — will allow MWeb to offer its own customised mobile data packages.
MWeb ISP CEO Derek Hershaw says in a statement that the company is enjoying stronger growth in demand for mobile data compared to fixed lines. The company has been a reseller of mobile 3G services for some time.
“The internetwork agreement with Cell C allows us to create our own 3G products and bundles according to our customer’s needs,” says Hershaw. “MWeb customers will now benefit from first-line support, competitive pricing, month-to-month contracts and no Sim card and connection fees.”
He says the deal “strengthens the existing relationship” with Cell C. “With mobile data rates reducing significantly, we are now able to provide our own solutions to customers that are competitive and affordable,” Hershaw says in the statement, hinting that MWeb intends offering fixed and mobile broadband bundles to its customers. — (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media
