The horror truck accident on Fields Hill near Pinetown in Durban, posted by eNews Channel Africa, was the video South Africans watched the most on YouTube in 2013, Google, which owns the video platform, said on Wednesday.
Globally, the world watched the The Fox more than 265m times, making it the top trending video of 2013. YouTube users worldwide now consume 7bn hours of video every month on YouTube and upload a week’s worth of video per minute.
“South Africans joined the global community in dancing the days away with Ylvis, Miley, Katy, Psy and Rihanna, but more local events took precedence as they flocked to watch with horror the tragic Pinetown truck accident in Durban and the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi,” Google said.
“South African sport and national pride ruled when rugby player Bryan Habana raced a new British Airways A380 plane, and viewers showed their concern about child safety on Johannesburg’s roads,” the company said.
“Last but not least, South Africans continued to demonstrate their appreciation for humour, with spoofs on How Animals Eat Their Food, and with a record number of comedy channels making the list of most watched YouTube Channels this year. Ellen, Just For Laughs, MduComics and Failarmy all kept South Africans laughing throughout 2013.”
